Can I just say OW. Running 15km wrapped around a 40km bike is not easy when you haven't put in the hard miles. And I haven't. But it's been a long time since I raced a duathlon...the last time was about eight or nine years ago at Marina South where I SUCKED. So I decided to sign up for more sucking. The new Marina Bay/Shenton Way course looked pretty fun...I mean we ran up to Clarke Quay and down Boat Quay three times and criss-crossed in front of tourists trying to catch a glimpse of the Esplanade so I was entertained while my quads were screaming in pain. Because of the Sydney World Cup next weekend, I couldn't afford to ease up on the fencing this weekend. That meant a two-session day yesterday, with the Armour Road Relay training run in the morning. Add to this the FA Cup final (damn you Drogba) and it was no surprise that I overslept by TWO hours this morning. After being frantically woken up by mom at 7am, with my race start at 8.05am, I was really considering punking out. But it's such a bitch to return the ChampionChip if you don't do it at the event that I decided to head down anyway and see what was what. Amazingly, I racked my bike with 10mins to spare (screw warming up) and no breakfast (who needs food). Still, an opening 10k in about an hour and a 1.22 bike wasn't too bad considering. But then the shooting pain in my right glute brought on by two lessons and too many lunges yesterday made by closing 5k a death-march. It kinda sucked that I couldn't really rock the bike. The number of biker chicks who came tearing by me was depressing. I didn't make it under my target of 3 hours but it was amusing. What is less amusing is the eight hours I now have to spend in the office with the same shooting pain in my glute. No need to cover S-League match tonight. Thanks for small mercies. Pain. Tired. Sleepy. What a Sunday. |
