Ok it's taken a few days to get down to writing about Kuwait due to the lack of colleagues at work and the tsunami-like amount of work that seems to be piling in from all corners. Kuwait was a strange place to be in. Rich, and very poor at the same time, very expensive, military presence everywhere and the day after I left, random shooting of Westerners in the city itself. Food was Middle Eastern (duh) and not very exciting, but I'm glad all of it was free, along with the hotel. The event itself was very well organised and the abundance of sponsor moolah rolling around certainly cheered everyone up. I made the 32 and since I only expected to make the 64, I was quite pleased. Sadly, I only seemed to be able to beat up on the Kuwaitis and lost to 16-year-old Wang Feng from China who made the 8, an Iranian who came in third, and of course Christoph who won the whole shebang. So not much to complain about other than not being good enough to rank in the top 8 in a world cup. Oh well. Back to the training board. It still is nice though to remind myself that I'm not completely out of place in an international event. I just wish I could have gone to Qatar, where we would have stayed at the Sheraton for free. Next year. For now, it's focus on Brunei and the South-east Asian champs. Hopefully we score some medals to convince SSC to send us to Manila at the end of the year. After that, I think I get a bit of a break until after CNY so I can get on with my fitness/weight-loss/6-pack routine again. Damn, shouldn't have had those three beers last night. Feel all guilty again. Sigh. Time to get back to work. |
